Kernza Lager
Big Grove Brewery has partnered with Patagonia Provisions to brew Kernza Lager. This lager made with organic ingredients is brewed with Kernza, a robust perennial grain which helps to support regenerative and sustainable agriculture practices.
Why Beer?
Beer is, after all, an agricultural product.
Patagonia is working with like-minded breweries across the country to create beers using organic and regenerative ingredients, like Kernza®, a soil-saving, carbon-capturing perennial grain. This is the first beer made with organic ingredients being offered from Big Grove as we continue to strive towards more sustainable and better for you brewing practices. Organic Eureka and Contessa hops fill out the flavor with Organic Weyermann Pilsner Malt.
What is Kernza?
What is
Kernza?
Kernza is a perennial grain developed from intermediate wheatgrass, known for its deep root system and environmental benefits. Unlike traditional annual grains, Kernza grows year after year without needing to be replanted, reducing soil disturbance and erosion. Its deep roots improve soil health by retaining nutrients, enhancing water absorption, and sequestering carbon, making it a powerful tool in the fight against climate change.
In sustainable agriculture, Kernza reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides due to its natural resilience, while also fostering biodiversity. As a climate-friendly crop, Kernza offers a more sustainable alternative to conventional grains, promoting healthier ecosystems and long-term agricultural stability.
Kernza is a versatile grain that can be used in a variety of ways, similar to wheat or barley. Its nutty, earthy flavor makes it perfect for baking breads, pastries, and cereals. It's also used in brewing, adding unique grassy and sweet notes to beers.
Its adaptability in cooking and brewing, along with its sustainability, makes Kernza a favorite for eco-conscious chefs, brewers, and home cooks looking to make delicious food with a positive environmental impact.
